We need a radical, Right-wing and truly conservative party to provide an alternative to the high-spending regime we currently have, and are due to be offered at the next election. The mantra that “Labour would be worse” does not resonate, because we cannot see any differences between the parties’ policies. It records a senior backbencher who will not be standing for re-election as saying: “I’m disillusioned by the move to the Right.” This MP is oblivious to the fact that the constant drift to the Left is what has caused voters to desert the Tories in their droves. SIR – Your report (“ Conservatives to walk out in numbers not seen since 1997 landslide”, July 3) lays bare why the party is heading for oblivion. I still judge for the English-Speaking Union. I was aware that bright children were not getting into university or good jobs because of how they spoke, so helped to promote debating in primary schools, a vital tool for success. I taught in a state school in the 1960s, having trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. SIR – Sir Keir Starmer makes a very valid point about the importance of oracy (report, July 7). No such discounts are available for those of us who live just outside the proposed Ulez zone.įor us, Ulez is therefore a double whammy: no transport concessions and a hefty charge for using our vehicles to travel into London.

Has he got an opinion on anything that he will stand by? SIR – I always saw the Liberal Democrats as the eternal fence-sitters, but Sir Keir Starmer has now indicated that he both opposes and supports Sadiq Khan’s plan to expand London’s ultra-low emission zone (report, July 7).
